Local Police and Detectives
Many people strive their entire lives to become a police officer or detective. These jobs are both exciting and commendable. Whether you work in a big city or you are a local municipal police officer your job is to protect and serve your community.
This means that your primary responsibility is to protect the lives and property of the people in your jurisdiction both on and off duty.
Municipal police officers perform common policing tasks depending on their area. These tasks may include traffic control, regular patrol, investigating crimes and first aid response.
Typically, officers are assigned to a specific location and they serve that location during their shift. Certain areas may employ special police units like the SWAT team, a canine unit, bike patrol, motorcycle patrol, horseback patrol and boat patrol.
Federal Law Enforcement

The DEA conducts special investigations in conjunction with local and foreign governments into illegal drug activity. This may involve surveillance, undercover investigations, raids and other activity to protect and serve the United States domestic drug laws.
Customs agents investigate and enforce the laws surrounding drug trafficking, child pornography, illegal customs activities and money laundering.
INS agents are responsible for up holding the laws regarding immigration and protecting the United States border. This involves detaining and deporting illegal immigrants, assisting legal immigrants, examining documents, interviewing potential immigrants, writing reports, updating records and processing applications.
Border patrol agents work along the 8,000 miles of border in the U.S. And maintain its security.
The largest jurisdiction of any federal agency belongs to the U.S. Marshals. U.S. Marshals perform a wide variety of tasks including pursuing federal fugitives, protecting federal judiciary members, witness transport, prisoner transport and control and seizure of property in federal investigations.
F.B.I. Agents perform investigations of all varieties that pertain to both crimes and issues regarding national security. Secret Service agents protect the President, Vice President and their families. They also protect former and potential Presidents.
However, many would be surprised to learn that they also investigate financial crimes like credit card fraud, counterfeiting and forgery of government checks.
