Are you allowed to claim job seekers allowance if you are a retained fire fighter?

My husband has just been made redundant and is looking for a new job. He is also a retained fire fighter (on call via an alerter as and when needed). We just wondered whether he could claim any allowance seeing as he will have a small amount from fire service (very small!!). God knows we've paid enough in taxes and NI in the past - why not get something back wwhile he is looking!!? Thanks.
