Is It Illegal For A 14 Year Old To Have A Hunting Knife?

By Jeff On August 27, 2009 Under Knife Hunting

i go camping with my father, every month.
i have gotten quite good at it, he has a collection of Hunting Knifes and lets me use them on the camping trips.
He wants to buy me a knife, on my birthday, but i think it is illegal....is it?
i am not a 'gangsta' so i am not violent and don't intend on stabbing everyone, so i am mature enough to possess a blade.

You can own the knife, but don’t get caught with it. I think for a blade to be street legal it has to be 3 inches or less.

Try looking up your state’s laws in this link: http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/sta-law…
Different states have different laws about carrying a weapon such as a knife. I don’t think any state has a law against a 14 year old being able to OWN a knife. I suggest you check your state or city laws before you start walking around with one though. There are limits to a knife you can carry in public such as blade length and where you can carry. Don’t take one to Government buildings like the Post office. Don’t take it to any School or on any property of a school.
Example of a knife I legally carry around in my state:
A folding knife with a blade length of four inches.
In my state it is legal to carry a knife with a blade less than or equal to 5 and one half inches.
IMPORTANT: When you measure the blade, be sure to measure the whole length and not just the sharpened part. This length does not include the handle.

No you are not a ‘gangsta’ as you put it … and you are not violent … that is, until you suddenly have the urge to use the knife.
Edit:
This is the same young man who asked the question below on how to purchase military guns. You seem to be collecting a lot of arsenals for a young man your age. I worry about your intentions at this point in time given all that has happened in the US so far..
Your Previous Question follows:
Can someone refer me to a good information site about America Military Guns?

It would depend on the state in which you live. Generally speaking, however, as long as you are just using it for camping and don’t walk around town with it, you should be fine. Besides, if it’s in your room with your parents’ permission, who cares? Cops can’t just kick in your door and search your room because you are 14 (it’s called protection under the 4th Amendment of the Constitution from illegal search and siezure).

It’s illegal. It’s illegal for anyone to carry a knife of any description unless you have an authorised reason for it. IE, carrying it to and from your place of work and as you’re only 14 this does not cover you. Go to your local police station and ask their advice.

its not illegal unless it longer than 3 inches ….if u r going to buy 1 u shud give it to ur dad to keep until u go hunting again…..u nvr know hoo can get to it so the farther it is away from u and ur freinds the safer itll be ebcuz theres some crazy people out there…im not sayin ur freinds are crazy but just in case……

It doesn’t necessarily depend on what State you’re in. Some municipalities (cities) have very strict laws on what you may or may not own, let alone carry. Carrying a concealed hunting-knife is a felony for an adult. DON’T.
Street-legal in most USA cities is a 3-inch blade. You need to find out about YOUR area. There is technically nothing wrong in your OWNING the knife.
Your father may or may not be comitting the misdemeanour ‘contributing to the delinquency of a minor’, by buying it for you. If YOU cut yourself with it, HE would face ‘reckless endangerment’ charges.
If you have a completely clean sheet, and so does your father, and you live in a big hunting State, (outside any city limits), then I reckon you can get away with taking your HUNTING knife on HUNTING trips, so long as no Park Ranger spots you using it, unsupervised.
On the whole, Bad Idea. Borrow your Father’s knives, until you’re 18. That way, the only person you can get into trouble is yourself.

Sir That is not a appropriate question we will have to ask you to leave>

Owning one is not illegal, buying one is for you at 14 and carrying one in a public place is too.. All that’s needed is common sense. If you’re going camping take it as its a reasonable excuse but don’t go to play football down the park with it. Knives are not dangerous. Its stupid people who misuse them that are dangerous. Let your dad get it.

A knife is a tool, just like a gun. So long as its used for legal purposes and in a responsible way then there should be no problem. Knowing how to use it, what to use it on, and how to look after it is an association with all tools. You sound a level headed sort of lad, so I’m sure you will there would be no problem in you having a knife. Just remember to use it for its purpose and don’t start showing it off to mates or something. Jealousy always brings trouble.

It is not illegal, as long as you don’t take it out in public. The only time you should be carrying it is when you are out in the field with your father.
Ignore the other unhelpful comments here. There are too many people who want kids to be sheltered and shielded from the more dangerous parts of life.
One person here said get a gun too, even though they were being sarcastic… I would recommend that you do try to get some experience in the safe handling and use of a gun, since it is a useful life skill to have. Half of the people who claim to be ‘anti-gun’ have never seen or held one, never mind been taught to use it safely. Did they ever stop to consider that it could save someone’s life to know how to make a gun safe if they encounter one in their life?
As for your knife, I see no problem in you having one as long as you can understand its potential danger and behave responsibly with it. If you are going to own a knife like that, then you need to be responsible. You sound like a reasonable and mature young man, so I doubt you will have any problems with being sensible with a knife.
If you are looking for a recommendation, I can suggest one of the knives in the KA-BAR company’s range. They produce some excellent knives that will last you your whole life. I have one, and I am very happy with it.
Good luck with your camping, it’s really good to see that some young people are still interested in learning how to look after themselves in the countryside!
