What was the dimensions of the original Bowie Knife?

Bowie Knife Jim Bowie

Bowie Knife Jim Bowie Sandbar Fight Blacksmith Jesse Clift Black Smith Snowden Jim Bowie
Bowie knife by Jim Bowie

Jim Bowie and the Bowie knife have almost become synonymous. In the early 1800's it was common place for men to carry a knife as a sidearm but it wasn't until 1830 that the famous Bowie knife was made that forever carved a niche in history for Jim Bowie

The actual making of the Bowie knife was a progression of knife designs. The first knife was claimed to be designed by his brother Rezin in Avoyelles Parish in Louisiana and made by a blacksmith Jesse Clift in order to protect his younger brother from some of the company he was keeping

This knife was referred to by many as Bowie's butcher knife that was used at the Sandbar Fight. Another rendition of the story according to Jim's older brother John was that a blacksmith named Snowden, made a hunting knife for Jim which was used during the duel. Either way the prototype and the legend had begun

In 1827 the famous duel occurred across from Natchez, Mississippi on a Mississippi River sandbar. As a second in the duel, Bowie found himself in the middle of the ruckus armed with a butcher knife. In the events that followed Bowie found himself badly beaten, shot and stabbed but before him laid one man cut to ribbons and another one disemboweled

In 1830 in Texas, Jim Bowie armed with the famous Bowie knife made by James Black, was attacked by three men hired to kill him. The stories flourished as Bowie wielded the heavy knife against his attackers. In the end, one man was almost beheaded, another was disemboweled and the third had his skull split open

The original Bowie knife was two inches wide and a quarter inch thick with the blade being about 12 inches long. The back of the blade had a soft metal inlaid to catch the opponent's blade during a scrape. Razor sharp was the top edge of the clip point. In order to protect the hand a brass quillon was in place

At the Alamo, Jim Bowie had his trusted Bowie knife. As the Alamo was overrun by the Mexican army, Jim Bowie laid on a cot in the Low Barracks with his Bowie knife and pistol at hand. Tales exist that before he was killed that he took out nine of the oncoming soldiers

In the end, the bowie knife lost the capital B but its' fame has continued to grow. The original Bowie knife was never found

i just started liking billy joel and the police ALOT! i was wondering what music is like them, and is this genre just classified as "rock" or is it like "classic rock"?

also i only have by the police
-every breath you take
-cant stand loosing you

and billy joel
-only the good die young
-piano man
-captain jack

i also like changes by david bowie.

So what are some other great songs by these artists, and by others to! thanks so much
and of newer music i realy like the fray.
thanks! i am downloading music right now.

I love the Police too (and Billy Joel has some good songs). It's hard to say because they're kinda new wave and classic rock at the same time. Some other 80s bands that remind me of them:

the Cars
Genesis
Billy Idol
Tom Petty
Outfield
U2 (certain songs)
Journey
Hall & Oates
"Let's Dance" by Billy Joel (my fave song he does, also kinda new wave rock)

Also Maroon 5's last cd (It wont be soon before long) reminds me ALOT of the Police, especially the song "Not Falling Apart".

The tower of Babel is the synonym in the Bible for a human being. In a "normal" human being every part works and communicates together.

The brain, spine and connection with the Soul, the Antahkarana, comprise the tower.

Along the spine are the Seven Major Chakras or parallel processors. As I said, these chakras rarely communicate. They rarely work together. The parable goes that because God was afraid that the Tower of Babel would be built so high as to reach heaven, he purposefully created different languages amongst the various people building the tower.

Because of the lack of communication the tower never got built to Heaven.

The lack of communication between the chakras, or the people building the Tower of Babel, symbolises their lack of integration. Because we are not integrated our psychic bodies will not reach up to heaven. We never managed to contact our Higher Selves. We are not Enlightened.

The Enlightened have built a Tower of communication "Twixt Heaven and Earth".

In the Ancient Sanskrit this Tower has been given the name "The Antahkarana".

It is the psychic wiring, created in mental matter. A thoughtform created dually by the Soul and the aspirant to connect the Crown Chakra through to the Soul and then to the spiritual triad and then the Monad.

Your evolution is the height of your Antahkarana.

The Astral plane is not flat. Although most people inhabit the psychic slums in the basement of the astral plane in their dreams, when they go to sleep.

It is the "Rainbow Bridge" whereby the Higher frequencies of the energy of the Soul are stepped down to that of the Earth, so that the Earth itself can raise its frequencies, can evolve. We have been created to help in this creative act.

These frequencies are stepped down Octave by Octave through each Chakra which are really Way Stations in the Energy System of the Soul. This is the "Music of the Spheres" of Pythagoras. Because The Enlightened Master Pythagoras was indeed talking of Chakras when talking about the Spheres or the Planets. Each Chakra as it evolves corresponds to one or more of the Planets. This is the secret of Astrology. This is the means whereby the Seven Sacred Suns and the Seven Sacred Constellations in this Sacred Universe affect us.

Each Chakra, when working correctly, acts like a Transformer in an Electrical system to halve the Energy Frequency of God. The frequency drops Chakra by Chakra, "Station by Station" as said David Bowie, on its way down to this planet because as Gurdjieff said "Normal Human Beings are transmitters of Cosmic Energy". And this is the function of Normal Human Beings. Those who are Enlightened. To transmit the Energy of The Soul. Whereby the higher energies of Truth, Prophesy, Intuition and Initiation are sent down towards this Planet.

Where the Higher Energy Frequencies of God create the Higher Energy Thoughtforms towards which the Median of the Masses are moved as they evolve and as the Earth Spirit Evolves.

Because the Energy Transmitted by the Enlightened is used to raise the frequency level of the Earth itself and all the people on it. To transmit the Light of Love down on to this planet of Love.

To dissolve the Selfishness of the separated selves, those "Law of the Jungle" Egos who cannot communicate with The Higher Self. Who think of themselves as Separate. Who think themselves Apart. Who do not know that they too are A Part of the Universe of God Itself. Those who are not connected. Those who have not been touched by God. Those who are not "Made".

The Enlightened exist to bring light into darkness. To dissolve the darkness and this itself is the meaning of the Sanskrit word "Guru". A person who dissolves or Transmutes Goo is a GooRoo.

And this is done through the Light of the Soul. Brighter than Ten Thousand Suns it exists alone. Unchangeable. Like Fire it lights everything with which it comes into contact. And once you are lit, you too burn with the Fire of the Soul. Like Prometheus you bring down the Fire of God onto the Earth, for the Benefit of every living being. Hari OM Tat Sat.

This is Sat Chid Anand.

Satchidanand, Director of Energy Enhancement, is one of the leading teachers of Meditation.!

I am looking for a good, all around, fixed blade knife. Something I can take camping, hunting, hiking, and use for "survival" should the SHTF. All this for about $50. I know there is no perfect knife but here are the ones im am looking at. (All these are on Amazon)
- Ka-Bar "short" (USMC style) - $45
- Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie short 12.63in - $42
- Gerber Big Rock Camp Knife - $31

Ka-Bars are NICE but I personally find them too big to comfortably carry around on the trail on my waist. More often than not I'd find myself leavin' it in my tent or backpack and throwing a multi-tool in my pocket.
I say go with the Big Rock, it's light, comfortable, durable and cheap. You're more likely to use it and less likely to be afraid of gettin' it dirty and worn.

I'm not looking for a mini knife. I want something that has everything i need to survive in the wilderness- Something to skin fur with/cut branches/catch fish/cook fish w/ matches/ and a compass. I dont think anyone could survive with a foldable pocketknife. I'm talking about a nine incher with an emergency survival kit. If you dont think this one is fine than throw me a few links you think are good. The price cant be really high please. I want a razor sharp blade.

Save your money on that knife, they are cheap junk knives. Remember you get what you pay for. I have several "survival" knives. All the Rambos (collectible) but I wouldn't take them in the field. Unless I had a real LILE one, mine are copies. Nice to look at and feel but thats it. Sure they will cut you and slice and dice you but not good in the field. For heavy chopping look for a older Buckmaster 184, you will not beak it. Also the 184 has a hollow handle you are looking for. Or a Gerber BMF / LMF knife. Those are two that will not let you down. Take a pocket knife with you all the time. A large survival knife is lousy for skinning a rabbit or gutting a fish. Sure you can tie it to a stick and kill a wild boar and all that but you will be smart to go after a rabbit or bird to live on in the wild. If it comes to that.

I have a beautiful, Winchester bowie knife, and was wondering if it would be legal for me to carry it unconcealed (it's pretty hard to canceal a 7" knife) in public in Southern California (not L.A.). NO, I am not taking it to school!

Other than laws prohibiting the possession of knives in schools or public buildings, the possession of switch blades, and the possession of CONCEALED dirks or daggers (which includes almost all fixed-blade knives), there are no state laws regulating knife possession in California. Note that a knife openly carried in a belt sheath is not concealed.

You should check, however, whether there is any applicable local ordinance.

Today, there are hundreds of blades shapes available to do a variety of tasks. Each one is a compromise combining differing degrees of efficiency and utility. Let's discuss some of the most common blade shapes.

One of the most common blade shapes is the drop point blade. Drop point blades do most everything well. The tip of the blade is narrow and has some curvature for fine slicing when doing chores such as cleaning game. The drop point also works well in gardening or in the kitchen.

Another popular blade style is the clip point. The clip point is also popularly known as the bowie-style blade. Clip point knives have a fine tip that is less ideal for fine cutting but penetrates well for poking holes in tough materials such as heavy nylon or leather. The clip point blade usually also has less curvature at the edge which makes it less useful for many everyday cutting tasks.

A less common blade shape is the sheepsfoot. The sheepsfoot blade has a blunt tip so is suited only for cutting. It is popular with botanists and gardeners for grafting because it makes a clean, straight cut. Sheepsfoot blades are usually only used in smaller sized knives.

A blade style that has gained in popularity during the last couple decades is the hawkbill. As the name implies, the blade is shaped like a hawk's bill or talon. Many times these blades are serrated for use in maritime environments for cutting ropes or other lines. There use is otherwise very limited.

The tanto is also a common blade shape. It is identified by the geometric shape of its' tip. Tanto blades are known for being able to take abuse due to maintaining their full blade thickness near the tip. That translate into a blade that can take heavy prying and stabbing without sustaining serious damage.

That covers the most popular blade shapes but there are a myriad of them. It is best to identify what activity the blade will be used for and then choose the shape that best meets your need.

Sam Jennings is an avid outdoorsman with many years experience spent in the wilderness. Currently, his favorite knife is the Spyderco Lum Chinese.

The following article was the topic of many discussions among fellow martial artists. It presented us with a tough question. “how can you defend yourself if the following happened to you?” [read the article below]

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - A passenger sleeping on a Greyhound bus was killed and decapitated by his seatmate on Wednesday night as the vehicle rolled across the Canadian prairies, witnesses said.

“All of a sudden, we all heard this scream, this bloodcurdling scream,” said Garnet Caton, who was sitting just in front of the victim, in an interview with CBC Television.

“The attacker was standing up right over top of the guy with a large hunting knife — a survival, Rambo knife — holding the guy and continually stabbing him, stabbing him, stabbing him in the chest area,” Caton said.

The attack continued as other passengers fled the bus and waited for police on a desolated stretch of the TransCanada Highway near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, said Caton, who helped bar the bus door to prevent the
attacker from leaving.

‘No rage in him’
“He calmly walks up to the front (of the bus) with the head in his hand
and the knife and just calmly stares at us and drops the head right in
front of us,” Caton said.

“There was no rage in him … It was just like he was a robot or
something,” Caton said.

Caton said the victim was stabbed up to 50 times. CBC reported the Royal Canadian Mounted Police took the attacker into
custody.

Authorities declined to provide other details of what they described as a
“major incident.”

(continue)

—————————-
Now when I entered a Martial Arts forum and discussed with others how to defend yourself against this form of attack there seemed to be a lot of silence. Being how grizzly this attack is, it’s not wonder.

Some members in the forum said, “you must pack a gun” I agree with having a gun, knowing how to use it, and use it if necessary. But “you must pack a gun” does NOT solve the problem if you’re in a deep sleep in public and
suddenly someone begins to stab you and saw your head off.
Another member said you “must train for situations that are hostile” I agree with that too, but still it does NOT solve the problem.

The only advice in the forum I saw that had any merit was the member that said “you cannot put yourself in that situation. Think about it, ANYTHING can happen to you if you fall asleep in public. It doesn’t matter if the crime rate is high or low and it’s in the middle of the day.”

Now this man, I totally agreed with him. Sadly we live in a world where you cannot (or should not) leave your windows unlocked, your doors unlocked, and in this case, fall asleep in public.

Even if you’re exhausted from work, and dead tired, I know it sucks but stay awake! The only exceptions I can think of is if you’re on the beach
sun bathing.

And if I were on the train that day, yes, I would have emptied my clip into him. I would want anyone that attacked me to do the same. Even if I had no chance of survival I would still want someone coming to my aid unlike all the passengers there in Canada. They all ran in terror.

Another member was wondering if in Canada perhaps guns are banned. I looked it up for myself and here’s what I found:

[ By law, a potential customer must be 18 years of age or older to purchase a firearm or legally maintain possession of one. Citizens of Canada under the age of 18 but over the age of 12 may procure a Minor’s Licence which does not allow them to purchase a firearm but allows them to borrow a firearm unsupervised and purchase ammunition.]

But even if you did not want to own a gun, you can still protect yourself with a taser.

Its incapactation rate is equivalent to a 9mm handgun. There is no excuse to NOT defend you or your fellow citizens if something like this happens in your presence.
