Rescue Police

Rescue Police

Many of you may have heard of a relatively new phenomenon called the Reverse 911 Telephone System. Across the USA, local police, fire and paramedics departments have been implementing the system for purposes of establishing immediate contact with the population to notify of possible health, weather or other safety emergencies and provide instructions for further actions.

Thus far, the feedback has been very positive. Most people who have had the opportunity to experience the system at work, have been grateful to have up-to-the-minute alerts and pertinent information. These are the area residents whose phone numbers have made it into the system. The problem authorities have encountered is obtaining phone numbers for every household in their jurisdiction. People are encouraged to update online databases with current contact information, but it hasn't worked as well as expected. So far, only about half of the overall population has done so. So what are the authorities to do? After all, sometimes people have to be saved in spite of themselves. One can't only alert those who've bothered to help themselves and allow all the others to fend for themselves! Therefore, the only way to make the Reverse 911 telephone system truly effective is for the public safety departments to do the job themselves and populate the databases with every resident's phone number. But how?! Why, reverse phone lookup, of course!

One imagines, every town can spare a couple of operators to mine the phone data by running a reverse phone lookup on every household, and subsequently populating the databases. More often than not, these transactions may even be free for published numbers. And even when they are not, it seems to make sense to spend a handful of change per transaction after spending thousands of dollars on a system that can't achieve its optimal potential unless it can reach, forewarn and protect every individual. So, man up public servants, and do the job yourselves if you want it done right. Without the help of reverse phone lookups, the Reverse 911 System is a hit-or-miss at best, and that's just not what it was meant to be.

Police Knife

Police Knife

There are any number of self-defense tools available for those who feel they need such things to ensure their safety. For those who live in places that allow concealed carry, a handgun is almost universally going to be the best tool for defending yourself; but for those who are either unable to due to laws, or unwilling to due to personal beliefs, what is the best option?

Many people opt to carry knives, but there are a variety of problems with this. Knives can carry similar legal issues to firearms, in addition to the problem of requiring a great deal of skill to use effectively. Pulling a knife to defend yourself can end in tragedy if you lack the necessary training and skill to use it properly. And again, you open yourself up to legal ramifications; even if you are not the aggressor, there is almost always going to be some form of legal trouble if you kill someone. And of course many of us do not want to kill someone if we can avoid doing so. And for those with knife-fighting skills, there is a superior weapon anyways...

This leaves two popular choices for non-lethal self-defense with a minimum of legality issues - sprays and stunners. Pepper sprays and maces are probably the most popular non-lethal self-defense devices, but they do have a lot of weaknesses. In addition to the risk of an mace-immune aggressor (approximately one in ten people are immune to the effects of such sprays), you also face the risk of blowback putting you on the receiving end of your own spray!

This leaves us the various forms of stun guns and tasers. Stun guns, somewhat counter intuitively, are the close-range devices that require close contact with the attacker. For most situations where self-defense is reasonable, this is fine. I personally prefer a 'stun baton' style stunner, as the extra length gives you both reach and something to defend yourself from attacks with; those familiar with knifefighting techniques can use them with a baton and will often find the results superior to what they would get with a knife.

But tasers, the long-range 'gun' style stunners favored by police are even better, if you are willing to pay the higher cost and spend the time it takes to become familiar with the weapon. Skill is key here, as you will usually only have a single shot, and trying and failing to attack an aggressor can have devastating consequences.

The last thing I'm going to say here is something anyone interested in self-defense should already know; your property is not worth risking your life. If you can avoid confrontation of any kind by handing over your wallet or watch or whatever, you should do so. Only if your body and life are in danger should a person resort to direct confrontation. The honest truth is, unless you are highly skilled and competent at self-defense, an attacker will usually be able to stab or shoot you before you get your own weapon clear and use it. So be sure to use your judgment!

Rambo Survival

Rambo Survival
What is the best fixed blade survival knife in your opinion?

Regardless of price what is the best fixed blade survival knife for general purpose woodland survival? Kabar, Kershaw, Benchmade, Gerber, Cold Steel, Ontario, Fallkniven, SOG, Busse...etc? What make and model in your opinion? I want a full tang design. Please don't tell me a Rambo knife with compass and a hollow handle for holding fishing line and hooks. lol.

There is an endless debate what a survival knife should be, small utility blade or larger one that can take and dish out lots of punishment.

If you go with second definition, then Busse knives are probably on top of the list. Very tough, pretty much indestructible and unusually high wear resistance and edge holding for those types of knives.

I own (and owned) Busses, Cold Steels, Sogs, Benchmades and bunch of other fixed blades. The toughest are Busses for sure.
As for the Cold Steel tests I am very skeptical about those, because they void the warranty if you try to replicate the tests.

My vote for heavy duty blades goes to Busse or if you are on the budget then Swamp Rat knives(SRKW).

SRKW review - http://zknives.com/knives/fixed/srkw/index.shtml

If you want something more exotic the kukris are also quite versatile and very tough use knives.
Kukris - http://zknives.com/knives/fixed/himp/index.shtml

Those are the knives that you can cut, chop and pry with.

For more utility type knives benchmade Nimravus is pretty good and not too expensive.
Fallkniven A1 is also quite tough knife from decent steel VG-10.

Cold Steel SRK was a good knife in older version of Carbon V steel. new ones are not as good unfortunately. Though, nowhere near to Busse or SRKW in heavy duty use.

All of those knives are full tang design.

Steel Money

Steel Money

Troubles in the steel industry reveal many of the same characteristics as allied industries: Instrumentation, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and concrete. But, steel has some rare characteristics which leads to special considerations in its design and fabrication. The major factors affecting design of steel structures are weight, steel connections, quality of steel, schedule & cost estimates. Here we will try to address first two issues - weight & connections.

Weight

Steel is heavy and contractors associate weight with cost and that is true. But the actual cost of the steel structure is in the design of connections. For example, depending on the job, steel could be purchased for about $420/ton, fabricated for about $430/ton and erected for $500/ton. This brings the total cost to around $1,350/ton. The corresponding cost of connections could be anywhere from $2,500 to $6,000/ton! So, getting an efficient steel connections design can help you save significant amount of money during fabrication & erection.

Connections

The connection designer generally requires full information on loads in order to design efficient and cost-effective steel connections. Instead of supplying "real" loads, the engineer requires connection designers to design connections based on the member's absolute strength. This forces the connection designer to provide design for the largest load possible in the member. Since these large loads possess inherently large safety factor, the required connections will become very heavy, severely over-designed and complex to fabricate.

This will further increase the fabrication, detailing and erection costs. But who is going to pay for this additional work? Is it the EOR or fabricator who provides connection designs? Does the EOR have authority to reduce member weight at the cost of complex connections? Industry participants frequently struggle with these troubling questions.
