Knife Blade

Knife Blade

Keep your Hunting Knives, Bowie Knives and Survival Knives sharp! Sharp Hunting Knives, Bowie Knives and Survival Knives cut through things quicker making your cutting tasks less tiring. Less force is required to make a cut so the knife is less likely to slip and cut you. As we talk about knife sharpening here we are talking about heavy bladed outdoor knives like hunting Knives, Bowie Knives and Survival Knives.

A key point in knife sharpening is to keep the original angle of the blade. You should be able to get an idea of the original angle by looking down the length of the blade, at the cutting edge from the front. The angle will vary based on what the purpose of the knife is for. Generally Hunting knives have a blade angle of 15 to 20 degrees. Heavier blades like those on Bowie Knives and Survival Knives have blade angles up to 30 degrees. Lansky and Timberline make knife sharpening kits that will help you maintain the proper angle as you sharpen.

There are a few choices on how to sharpen your knife blade. If the blade is still in good condition and just needs to have the edge touched up you should use a natural stone like an Arkansas stone. You may need to start with a course stone and then finish with a finer grit stone. People find they get a better edge that stays sharper longer by using a natural stone. You can purchase stones that can be used dry, or that need to be lubricated with oil or water.

If your knife needs some serious sharpening help, start with a Diamond sharpening stone. These stones tend to work on the blade faster. Then finish sharpening your blade with a natural stone.

A word of caution. Some people have used a power-driven grinding wheel to sharpen dull hunting knives. This can cause excess heat and take the temper from your blade, making the blade brittle.

There are two basic styles of sharpening your knife blade.

The first style of sharpening is using a circular motion. Start by holding the blade away from you at the proper angle. Run the blade in a clockwise motion on the stone until you have sharpened that side of the blade. Turn the blade over and repeat with a counter clockwise motion. An advantage to this method is the simplicity. The disadvantage is you have to be careful not to grind too much off one side of your blade. This will cause the cutting edge to be uneven and crooked.

The second style of sharpening is to use the entire length of the stone and sharpen the entire length of the blade with each stroke. Start with you knife blade edge facing away from you. Place the handle end of the blade on the end of the sharpening stone nearest to you. Push away from you, using the entire length of the stone and draw the entire blade across the stone so the tip of the blade swings off the stone at the far end. Make sure you keep a uniform pressure on the entire blade and hold the correct angle. Turn the blade over and repeat the process, pulling the blade towards you. Make sure you do an equal number of strokes on each side of the blade. The advantage to this is you sharpen your entire blade at the same time. The disadvantage is some people have trouble holding the proper angle and maintaining a uniform pressure.

How do you tell if your knife is sharp? Some people want their knives sharp enough to shave with. You can VERY CAREFULLY run you knife along your arm to see if it will cut the hair. Watch how much pressure you put on the knife or you could end up going to the hospital. We do not recommend this method. Another method, and the one I use, is to lightly and gently draw your thumb across (NOT ALONG) the blade. Your thumb is usually sensitive enough that you can feel the sharp edge of the blade. A lot of people disagree with this method but it has worked for me and I have yet to cut my thumb. A third method that has been used for a long time is to see if the blade cuts paper. We do not recommend this method. Paper is basically wood that has been mashed together in a criss-cross pattern and we feel this is hard on the blade. If you want to cut paper, use scissors.

Keep your hunting knives, bowie knives and survival knives sharp all the time. That way they will be ready to do the job you bought them for when the time comes. An added plus of spending the time at home getting a quality edge on your hunting knives is that should you find your blade needs a touch up in the field this can normally be accomplished quickly with a small pocket sharpener. Enjoy your time outdoors, Stay Safe, and always return home.

Stone Knife

Stone Knife

Sometimes carving a pumpkin is a daunting task. Yet, it can be easy and straightforward. The first step is to choose the right pumpkin. Get one that is symmetrical unless your design wants your palette to be uneven. Whatever the case, you need your pumpkin to sit flat when on a flat surface. Watch out for blemishes when choosing your pumpkin. When you choose your pumpkin it is best to get one with smooth skin and a nicely shaped stem. Skip pumpkins that are cracked or have large flaws as they will be harder to carve and often don't last as long.

Be careful to not carve your pumpkin too early. Try to begin your carving adventure at most two days early. Starting the day before Halloween is best for making jack-o-lanterns. If you are in for a cold night make sure you bring the pumpkins inside. Coldness will dry it out.

Before you start the carving, the first and the most important thing you will want to do is use a water-based marker and draw the design. This way when you make a mistake you will be able to erase it easily using a damp cloth or sponge. Next you will want to use a sharp knife with a straight edge to cut large areas. Have a parent or responsible person do this for you if you are incapable. Do not use a knife with a dull blade. This will not be safe.

You will be able to pick up serrated saws from hardware stores for kids that want to join in on the action. Safety requires that you carve away from yourself and that youth remember to have adult supervision. Whether you are a child or an adult, do not carve your design holding the knife in a stabbing position. When you are carving, make sure that there is always a portion of the knife in the pumpkin at all times and make sure that you use steady strokes.

When you are cutting out the lid, this has to be done at an angle. The inside diameter of the lid has to be smaller than the outside. Getting this wrong will result in the lid dropping right into the opening of the pumpkin. You want to make sure that you can close the lid as you would put a lid on a cookie jar.

Remove the seeds and stringy flesh from inside the pumpkin with a large spoon or scoop. When you begin carving out the face on the pumpkin, make sure you start near the center and make your way outward. When it comes to carving out larger features, do so in sections. If you are going to be cutting out details, use an X-Acto-knife. For small circles and curves, a potato peeler is a great tool. Carved portions can be removed by either pushing them out from the inside or in from the outside.

Don't upset yourself when a section is accidentally removed. It is easy to use a toothpick to keep it in position. Make sure that there are enough holes in the pumpkin to allow ventilation for your candle. Flatten a small area inside the pumpkin for the candle to stand, but try not to dig too deep into the pumpkin. This makes the jack-o-lantern spoil faster.

You also want to make sure that the flame of the candle does not reach the top of the pumpkin. You don't want to start cooking it. If you want to make sure your pumpkin lasts long enough make sure you seal in the moisture. Use petroleum jelly and coat the cut surfaces. You can also use vegetable oil if no petroleum jelly is nearby. If you have neither, simply cover the entire pumpkin with a damp cloth or towel when it is not being used.

If you want you could also purchase some stickers, markers or tempera paint so your children can decorate their pumpkins. There is so much fun in carving pumpkins for Halloween. If you are younger, have an adult nearby to help when needed. It is a fun process and it can be done together. Be careful when carving your pumpkin, and have fun creating the scariest pumpkin in the neighborhood that is going to make the rest of the kids stay far away or maybe even ask for ideas so they can carve one for next Halloween.

Make Halloween last a bit longer by wearing pumpkin jewelry.

Just like the servicing of machinery, the cutting tools also require proper servicing and sharpening from time to time. If these tools are not sharpened or repaired at a right point of time, they may become hostile and can even damage the subjects on which they are being used. So the case is with hair cutting scissors that these also need proper servicing in terms of sharpening and repairing at regular intervals. If a set of scissors is not serviced at a proper time, the chances are that it can ruin and damage the hair while cutting and styling, which will carry a wrong impression on the customer about your credibility. Though, every hair stylist or user of the scissors knows the importance of sharpening them but not everybody knows if when and how to get them sharpened?

The sharpening is a process, which helps turning a dull blade into a razor sharp cutting instrument. This can be a simple one step job or it even can be a whole process containing different steps for sharpening the high quality hair cutting instruments. Since, there are many kinds of sharpening methods, but they often depend on the type of scissors you are using. As in the case of German instruments, the sharpening can be performed using a high quality sharpening stone. On other hand, the Japanese type of scissors can only be sharpened using a specialized machine operated by experienced qualified technician. That is why the Japanese products are required to be returned either to the manufacturer or an approved service center for sharpening.

There is a usual process involved into sharpening the hair cutting scissors. The steps taken for sharpening the scissors are mentioned as below:

1. The first step to sharpen the hair scissors involves proper examination of the scissors. The blades of the hair scissors are examined so as to see if there are any nicks or burrs. Then, the ride line is examined to determine the appropriate sharpening process. The technician checks the blade to finger rest for any damage. The tips are checked to see if they close properly. Also, the tension is tested for its strength and accuracy. Then, the functioning of the hair scissors is also tested on a tissue paper and a human hair to detect any problems or flaws.

2. After the examination of the hair scissors all the problems are corrected related to twisting and bowing of the blades. Now the hair scissors are ready for convexing. The technician re-establishes the outer convex curve of the hair scissors using a flat disc honing machine. During this process, all imperfections in the ride line edge are corrected, which include nicks, burrs, or incorrect curvature.

3. The exterior surface of the blades is polished after the convexing is completed. Also, any scratches or damages to the surface metal are corrected.

4. The ride line is required to be absolutely perfect otherwise all work done to the blade is useless. It is the thin flat surface inside the edge of blade which runs while cutting. The ride line is given the finishing with oil stone and water stone technique of different grits. Then, the ride line is again examined by touch and visual magnification to determine the accuracy of re-assembling. If still, there remains any flaw the blade is returned to the oil and water stones to perform more honing.

5. The technician cleans each blade and other parts of the scissors before re-assembling. The tension is adjusted and the tips are checked for proper closure. Now, the hair scissors are tested for final quality. It is also tested on human hair to establish proper functioning of the scissors. If there is found any imperfection, it is corrected again and the hair scissors is polished to be delivered finally.
