Hunting Knife

Hunting Knife

Are you ready for hunting season? Fall hunting is just around the corner, with some deer seasons opening as early as mid-August. Since it's never too early to scout for great deals, I've highlighted some crucial pieces of hunting equipment below.

The Hands-On Hunting Knife

Regardless of whether they hunt with a bow or a gun, every hunter needs a first-class hunting knife. There are two main types of hunting knives I recommend: fixed-blade and lock-back folding knives. Fixed-blade knives are rugged, reliable, and easy to clean. Fixed-blade knives can also be dangerous if not packed and handled properly, so be sure to invest in a high-quality sheath. Most lock-back folding blades have the strength and reliability of fixed-blade knives, and they are safer to pack and carry. I favor lock-back blades against traditional folding knives because they reduce the risk of cutting your palm or fingers while in use. Additionally, many lock-back blades offer one-hand operation, a useful feature for any hunter.

A blade without a sharpener is like a gun without bullets. While some fixed-blades come with a sharpener in their sheath, it's best to have a separate sharpener for added efficiency. If you've never sharpened a knife before, enlist the aid of an expert for your first attempts.

Multi-function, Multi-use, Multi-tool

A professional multi-tool is also an excellent resource to draw upon in the wilderness. Multi-tools, or multi-function pocket knives, provide hunters with a myriad of instruments. Additionally, these tools double as excellent fishing, hiking, and camping accessories.

Let There Be [LED] Light

Third, you shouldn't go anywhere without a light, to be specific, an LED light. Even if you plan on hunting in the daylight, packing a reliable LED torch is just good common sense. After all, if you're a serious hunter, efficiency with your light is crucial. Many times you don't have two hands free to fumble with a switch, which makes an LED light with a one-handed operation design very hunter-friendly. LED headlamps are even better, as they free up both hands. As far as power and light output are concerned, LEDs far out-perform traditional bulbs. Whether you're using a flashlight, headlamp, or lantern, LEDs will not only shine brighter; they'll last longer too, meaning they'll function when you need them most. LED tactical lights that attach to rifles and other weapons are equally effective and efficient.

There's No Place Like Home

Finally, a compass or GPS unit is essential for tracking. You don't know where the game will lead you, but you'd better know how to get back to your camp. Even in the simplest of settings, it's easy to get turned around and lose your way. Don't risk getting lost because you didn't think you needed an orienting instrument. Additionally, make sure you know how to properly use your navigation device. If you don't, ask a seasoned expert to show you how, and practice in familiar territory before venturing out into the wilderness.

As the fall hunting season draws closer, make certain you're equipped with the tools you need to experience success. Don't wait -- get the right gear, right now. Of course, having all the right hunting gear can't automatically make you a great hunter, but it will provide you with the safety and tools to start becoming one.

Sharpening System

Sharpening System

If you're a person who has many knives, many edges to sharpen at a fairly consistent pace, electric knife sharpening is for you. So much time and effort will be saved. But take heed. Using these devices without proper training and only a little experience could be a regrettable move.

Electric knife sharpeners are well known for producing great heat while sharpening. Friction from the metal edge against the sharpener over time will do that. You've got to know just how hot you'll allow the metal edge to get. If your blade changes color on you, if you're waiting for that to be the sign, you've blown it. If you see sparks, forget about it. Your blade edge has been overheated and has lost its temper. Yeah, you've got an angry knife on your hands! (Ha!) No. To lose temper on a blade means that you have weakened it. Made it brittle, even pliable. Just imagine using it now. That is a knife that you don't want.

Even knowing that, electric knife sharpeners have improved a great deal over the last decade. Some of them are astonishing in what they claim they're able to do. Many are quoted as saying that they "will never detemper" a knife's edge. Wow. Wouldn't that be something? To never, ever have to worry. Truly amazing.

What about the sharpening angle? This is the angle of the bevel that determines the functionality and durability of each knife. Some modern electric knife sharpeners have high precision knife guides that it is said will achieve the exact sharpening angle they want, precisely. You needn't concern yourself over it. Some sharpeners actually claim that they will do as much as convert the existing sharpening angle of some knives to a different, more high performing sharpening angle. Another says that it'll get the edge to a condition that is better than the factory edge. It'll give it a sharpening angle that performs better than that given by the one's who've made the knife. Truly awesome declarations, one and all.

Many of the latest electric knife sharpeners have improved to having several sharpening stages all in one. The first stage is meant to get the edge to sharpness. You could stop right there if you wanted. The second stage is usually a finer sharpening with smaller abrasive particles than is found in the first stage. It is meant to get the edge to razor-sharpness. The third stage is meant for stropping. How about that? An electric knife stopper to get your edge silky smooth. Absolutely extraordinarye.

Electric knife sharpening has truly come a very long way. If everything they claim is true, why would anyone want to know how to manually sharpen their knives? A very good question. Here's your answer: It isn't possible to take most kinds of electric knife sharpeners away from home and out into the field. Many of them are battery powered but they're size or bulk doesn't make transport very practical. It isn't very wise to take an electric knife sharpener out camping or on a fishing trip. You really shouldn't take it out on a boat or on a hunt. With electric knife sharpeners, you've got to be near an outlet or in a secure and safe location.

Many times then, it just isn't sensible. Too many times you'll need to sharpen your knife's edge right where you are, where all you've got is yourself, maybe a pack and your own two hands. But most of all, more than all of this, sharpening on a sharpening stone will still get you the sharpest edge possible. It is still the most reliable way to sharpen your knives.

If you only need to sharpen your knives while you're at home, an electric knife sharpener is probably all you'll ever need. But if you're an active individual who often needs to do some sharpening while you're out in the world, you'll want to learn how to sharpen knives with your own two hands. And don't worry. You've got many choices to make that happen.

Knife sharpening isn't difficult. It just takes a bit of practice. Once you've got it, you'll have a very valuable skill that'll last your lifetime. You can do it anywhere, anytime. Isn't that something all by itself? And when you're home, surrounded by the many advantages of modern living, your electric knife sharpener can get your knife sharpening done for you in two flashes. Truly incredible, to be able to manually and electrically sharpen your knives. There'd be no circumstance you couldn't overcome.

Knife Hunting

Knife Hunting
What is a good brand of knife (hunting/camping)? and how are the ones I will list?

I am looking at knives. I like Gerber. I hate no name cheapo knives.

What about these other brands?

Smith and Wesson
Schrade
Old Timer
Jeep
Kershaw

etc.

I found a good deal on a Jeep knife. Are those any good?

My Gerber hunting knife is 27 years old. It's the only one I have not broken, chipped, or fatally dulled over the years.

Chipped the blade on the Smith & Wesson knife.

Broke the Schrade.

Never liked or used Old Timer

Never used a Jeep, except to drive. . .

I do have a folding Kershaw, use it every day for something. Carried it for about 10 years now. Good knive.

Blade Knife

Blade Knife

The purpose in sharing the contents found within the article would be to help you get hold of the ultimate superior quality kitchen knife at a very reasonable price. I adhere to one personal and special theory that many people don't usually think of when they're ready to buy their knives. What I believe is rather than buying that seventeen piece set that promises you would need every one, I'd prefer to buy a minimum number of quality knives which will definitely ensure 99% completion of any knife related tasks. Your cooking style wouldn't dictate the kind of knife you'd be getting, but always stick to anything basic when you are buying knives. The two most useful knives would be: a serrated & a chef's knife.

A chef's knife holds a characteristic of having a very straight and very sharp-edge feature, usually measuring approximately eight to ten inches in its span. This type of knife is definitely useful in approximately 80% of knife related duties. Serrated knives should include features like: long, sharp and jagged edges which will allow the knife to cut through soft and tender objects such as tomatoes and bread. The two mentioned knives cover approximately ninety five percent of any kitchen duties. I may opt not to use other knives because the 2 ones would already be sufficient. Although there are certain instances that it is important to get specialized knives to perform certain tasks that both these knives wouldn't be performing accurately. Some examples would include a paring knife/kitchen scissors.

But then again the 2 basic knives would still be better in performing any special tasks. If buying any of the 2 basic knives we have been mentioning be keen in checking those forged-blade knives rather than those stamped-blade ones. Telling them apart is easy; their difference lies in their handles, a forged-blade's knife's hand-molded., while the stamped-blade knife was pressed using some machine. The forged-blade knife naturally comes superior compared to that of a stamped-blade knife. Its huge advantage would be their durability.

When using a stamped-blade knife especially when its blades are loose, you might cut yourself accidentally. While using a forged-blade knife together with appropriate care and maintenance, will last one lifetime & by far safer to use. By now you have understood the qualities to check for when you buy a forged-blade knife, other contributing factors in searching for the ultimate best knife includes the dimensions of the knife. As a 'rule of thumb' whenever choosing the knife's size.

Check the length of the cutting or chopping board that you'd use often, and then measure the board diagonally. Purchase knives which are approximately equal or perhaps one to about two inches less than the total size of your cutting or chopping board. Always think that during buying knives, this kitchen equipment is truly a huge investment. Imagine the convenience it would bring the user.

Together with quality and appropriate care and maintenance a forged-blade knife could last one lifetime. Also check the knife's maintenance-package and really take extra care with it by reading the instructions and following them carefully When sharpening your knives, there are many tools available today. But my most favored would be that steel-sharpening rod & that two-stage 'knife sharpener', I usually don't prefer using those electric ones.

What's also great when using regular sharpening models is that they actually cost approximately half as much and performs equally the same superior job. When looking in enhancing kitchen productivity, getting quality knives is the ultimate best step to achieve that. I did suffer using those cheap stamped-blade knives. It was only recently that I realized that together with great techniques and that quality superior-knife. I now can definitely cut about 1/2 the time on my slicing, dicing & chopping duties. Good Luck!
