The knife was one of the first tools used by early humans, and in the past thousands of years its use and its design have evolved considerably. Today there are several different kinds of knives, made from a variety of materials, and used as tools, for cooking and other purposes. Let's take a look at the main types of knives that are presently available.

Carbon Steel

Carbon Steel has been used in the making of blades for many years. Knives made from carbon steel are tough and take a better edge with little effort. However, carbon steel blades discolor when they come in contact with foods that are high in acid, such as tomatoes and citrus fruit and the blades must be treated with care to avoid discoloration and rusting. If you are using carbon steel knives you should wash and dry them thoroughly after use. Some box cutter and utility knife blades are made from carbon steel.

Stainless Steel

Unlike carbon steel, stainless steel blades do not discolor or rust, however, they are not hard enough to maintain the best edge. Some utility knives and box cutter blades are made from stainless steel.

High Carbon Stainless Steel

Knives made from high carbon stainless steel offer a combination of the best attributes of carbon steel and stainless steel blades. They have the toughness and ability to hold an edge and, like stainless steel blades, they do not discolor when coming in contact with acidic foods.

Titanium

Titanium blades are made from a mold of titanium and carbides. When compared to steel, titanium is lighter, more wear resistant, and holds its edge longer. The titanium blade is more flexible than steel, they work best for tasks such as boning and filleting.

Ceramic

Ceramic blades are made of zirconium oxide and aluminum oxide. Although they are much more delicate than steel knives, they tend to hold their edge up to 10 times longer. However, once the blades have dulled, they must be sharpened by a professional.

Plastic

Plastic knife blades are primarily used in order to prevent vegetables and other edible items from becoming discolored from the blade of a knife. Plastic blades are not very sharp and require some force when cutting.

Hollow Ground

Hollow ground knife blades are manufactured with a process that fuses two separate pieces of metal together. After the pieces are fused, a beveled blade edge is created. Although these blades often have very sharp edges, the blade lacks the balance and longevity of a taper ground blade. This type of blade is most often found on knives that are used less frequently.

Taper Ground

Taper ground knives are manufactured with a single sheet of metal and are ground so that they taper smoothly from the spine to the cutting edge. This type of blade can be found on knives that are used frequently.

There you have it. These are the most common types of knives that are commonly available. The next time you buy a knife think about how you will use the knife and then choose one constructed from the materials that best match your purpose.

Tom Knapp writes for Safecutters, Inc., distributor of the Klever Kutter and Klever Koncept, two of the safest utility knives available. Klever Kutter virtually eliminates the risk of workplace injuries, while the permanently shielded blade protects packaged products. It has been approved by the Department of Homeland Security for safe air transport. For more information about Klever Kutter and other Safecutters products, visit SafeCutters.

Did the Samurai use Damascus steel when smithing katanas?

Any Japanese history buffs who truly know if theses swords were constructed from Damascus steel as an outer coating for their katanas- I have found that they did have a softer grade of steel in the center for flexibility and durability. I just bid on one on ebay but am not sure if this could truly be a durable mix for practical use. I appreciate your help on this-

No, the term Damascus refers more to the folding process that creates a way "grain" pattern on the steel. The master japanese swordsmiths used several different techniques to create their weapons, some involved using different types of steel being wrapped around each other. The highest quality being used for the cutting edge. They commonly used tamahagane or iron sand which is fairly rare and expensive.
The quality of the sword in many respects depends more on the processes used in manufacture such a clay tempering than whether the steel is damascus.

Bismuth,Hevishot is the best but it cost alot. You want 3" mags for ducks unless you are getting them in close and a full choke gun with #2,#4 shot if you are using plain steel. Rem makes some stuff called Wingmaster that works pretty good and BlackCloud is liked by shooters I talk too.

If you are shooting close in or a pond at 20-30yards you want a Mod or IC choke with #4 shot and lighter loads like half brass in 2.75".

Nowadays, steel detailing has become more popular, because steel buildings are widely used not only in commercial and industrial sector but also in building houses. The main reason behind this is that steel buildings offer many advantages and utilities. A steel building assures strength and affordability that you cannot get from traditional buildings.

The modern steel building is collection of many individual segments that have changed over time. With the recent benefit of Computer Aided Design (CAD), steel buildings have become a lot safer. These leads to a more efficient manufacturing process, as most steel buildings have become pre-fabricated. Smaller pre-fabricated steel buildings are simple enough to be constructed by anyone but larger steel buildings require professional construction workers to ensure proper assembly.

Steel detailing services provide an accurate image of each structural element, its placements, connections with other components and precise dimensions. Steel detailing is used for flawless construction.

There are lots of services included in steel detailing like:

Steel Detailing such as Shop/Fabrication drawings

Material Reports such as Advance Bill of Materials

Sheet Metal Layouts and Detailing

Post Tension Detailing

Working drawings for structures

Column connection to foundation with base plate details

Steel member Detail Drawings - for columns, beams and bracings with location of bolt holes and connecting members

In order to meet existing fabrication demands and secure detailing assets for the future, steel fabrication companies are outsourcing the steel detailing project work to established steel detailing companies overseas in countries like India. They are providing excellent services with the help of latest software and technology at affordable rates.

There are lots of steel detailing services providers available in India with expert and experienced engineers to provide accurate and cost effective steel detailing services. You can easily outsource your steel detailing projects to save your precious amount of time and money.

The majority of people know what and when to put together to make up a knife on most of the beautiful products in terms of grinds, blades and handles. Finished item is not the same always as to get to that point what it took and in that strength you must read to see the basic procedure that go in knife making. Along with the correct mixture of heat- treating, finishing and steels you may end up with an item, which you will use repeatedly and will also be proud of.

Finishing- Normally the jeweled metal knife is done from inside and from outside of your knife causing a breathtaking beauty. For achieving the antique look with the stonewash finish your knife will seem to be used from the first day along with some abrasive patterns. Knife seems slightly worn along with few smaller abrasions due to vibed finishing.

Heat Treating- Annealing procedure is quite famous in preparing an easy to use and powerful knife as before allowing it to cool it utilizes the highest amount of heat feasible for the item. The hardening procedure is to allow the knife to solidify the maker should utilize a mixture of annealing procedure or to be more specific, to attain the goal a dissimilarity of the annealing procedure. For controlling one of the earlier two kinds of heating treatments tempering process is used where the cooling level allowed will be controlled.

Steels- Majority of the knife aficionados will say you that when chromium is greater than 13%, the stainless steel is made. It doesn't actually give the capability to be stainless as with proper misuse it may still decline or rust but to do so it will take longer time significantly. First you can ask yourself why somebody will need a knife that admits openly allowing your blade to become rusted or stained. But your mind may change, as you understand that the non-stainless steel blade is more usable or powerful for a longer period of time. While two or more metals used together it is the Damascus steel, creating again a huge appearance that is to none is second but does not necessarily mean the blade is unbeatable.

Stainless steel is one of the most durable steel which comes with an elegant natural finish and is ideal for furniture and art décor. Because of its qualities, it is one of the most cost effective materials for construction applications.

Stainless steel was discovered by Harry Brearley in England in 1913. Brearley discovered it while doing an experiment of increasing the levels of chromium. Based on his experiment, a 12% of chromium makes the steel resistant to corrosion caused by acid. In 1920, there are two stainless steel types that was found to be useful and these are the martenstic stainless steel and the austenitic stainless steel.

The martensitic stainless steels are basically alloys of carbon and chromium that hold a martensitic crystal assembly in the solidified state. They are typically less resilient to oxidization compared to several other stainless steel grades. Martensitic types are also hardened by heat and are ferromagnetic. Generally, its chromium content does not go beyond 18%, while its carbon content can go beyond 1 %. Both carbon and chromium components are customized to guarantee a martensitic construction once hardening took place.

On the other hand, austenitic stainless steels hold an austenitic face-centered cubic or FCC crystal assembly. Austenite is virtually produced through the liberal application of components used for austenitizing including manganese and nickel. Austenitic steels are normally non-magnetic when it is in the annealed state. They can only be solidified through the application of cold treatment. The nickel component of austenitic stainless steels is normally no more than 35% while its chromium content on average ranges from 16 to 26%.

Stainless steel is also known as steel alloy that generally have at least 11.5% of chromium content. This material has certain qualities that do not stain and rust as compared to ordinary metals. When the alloy grade and type are not completely identified, it is known as corrosion resistant steel. These are mostly used in the aviation application. These kinds of steel have enough amount of chromium which prevents them from being corroded. In addition, this kind of steel has its natural smooth surface and does not need any painting. It is proven to last for so many years. Above all, it is 100% recyclable.

Stainless steel has different grades and surface finishing. It has around 150 grades. Fifteen of these grades are widely used. These types are produced into coils, plates, sheets, wires and tubing. Due to the qualities of stainless steel, it made its way as one of the mainly used steel in many commercial applications.

Stainless steel is widely used in cookware, cutlery, and kitchen utensils. These are along with hardware supplies, industrial equipments, structural buildings, automotive, and aerospace industries. Because of strong resistance to corrosion, it is largely employed for production of storage tanks and other food containers of fruit drinks. Likewise, medical equipment production also makes use of stainless steel because it can be steamed and sterilized over and over. It is also a prevalent material applied in a lot of jewelries and watches creation. The Rolex is one best example of watch brand that uses stainless steels for their numerous watch models.

In recent years, some of the renowned buildings and sculptures have exploited stainless steel for most of their parts. Among these famous buildings are the Petronas Twin Towers, Jin Mao Building Gateway Arch, and the upper part of the Chrysler Building. Similarly, countless restaurants use stainless steels in their furniture, panels, and railings. In automobile industry, Ford's 1930 Model A car was the first vehicle that used stainless steel in making the radiator shell. This started the popularity of the steel in the world of automobiles.

Stainless steel also comes with different grades regularly adopted to identify what kind of grade to be used in a particular purpose.

100 Series - austenitic manganese nickel chromium alloys
•	Type 101- the austenitic is hardened through cold working chiefly used in furniture and fixtures
•	Type 102-austenitic general purpose stainless steel for furniture
•	200 Series-austenitic nickel chromium manganese alloys
•	Type 201-austenitic that is hardened through cold working
•	Type 202-austenitic general purpose stainless steel
300 Series-austenitic nickel chromium alloys
•	Type 301-hardens quickly during mechanical working. Fine weld ability.
•	Type 302-higher strength due to additional carbon.
•	Type 303-referred to as "A1" in accordance with ISO 3506
•	Type 304-most common grade; the classic 18/8 stainless steel. Also referred to as "A2" in accordance with ISO 3506
•	Type 304L-contains less carbon than 304 grades.

Most hunting knives fails. They are either rust, lose their sharpness when it is most in need, or crack under pressure.

Cold Steel is made of high quality knives for the past 20 years, and they are very aware of this stark reality.

Just because they have created what is perhaps the best hunting knife on the market. Outdoorsman.

Here are my thoughts on a very aggressive knife:

What do I like it Outdoorsman:

1. 6 "blade is formulated in three layers of laminated steel called VG-1 San Mai III.

This is a steel inner circle (repeat) and the VG-1 stainless steel. Layer is much softer 400 series stainless on each side, which gives flexibility to Blade.

San Mai Steel is as good as it gets, however, spend more than $ 1000.

2. It's time to show Drop point design is perfect for skinning wild game.

3. You'll notice a ridge is the backbone of the blade, which seems to 'Blood career. "

This is actually a bone crusher, that you can use the forging device chopping edge.

4. Directly behind the bone crusher is jimping (thumb grooves). This feature is perfect apply direct pressure when you want to make precise cuts.

5. Cold Steel Outdoorsman is a finger guard and pommel, which is made of stainless steel. This will give you more Piece of Mind.

6. Full Tang Construction means that there is no need to worry about the resignation of the blade handle.

What I did not like:

1. Partial serrations that a knife would be helpful, but otherwise I have no major complaints.

Overall:

With a suggested retail value is $ 285, Outdoorsman Cold Steel knife is, it should be every penny.

It was built as the reservoir and withstand even the toughest situations.

Luckily for you, http://www.KnifeSell.com has Outdoorsman knives starting at $137.

All the best,
