I used mine to skin 14 bucks and gut 11 of them last year and never touched a stone to the blade, it's still as sharp as the day I got it. Plus, their knives are works of art, if you get him one, it is usefull, and heirloom quality. They start at about $300. If that's too spendy, Kershaw and Spyderco also make knives with the same steel, for less than $100, but nowhere near as attractive of knives.
